Meaning “New Day” (originally light or radiance). Its historical origins date back over 3,000 years and connect mythological liberation struggles with astronomical cycles.
The festival marks the spring equinox and has two central sources:
- Zoroastrian Roots:
Historically, its origin lies in Zoroastrianism, the ancient religion of Persia. The celebration was dedicated to the deity Ahura Mazda and symbolized the victory of light over the darkness of winter. It was already a central state festival during the Achaemenid dynasty (c. 550–330 BCE).
- King Cemşid:
In Persian mythology, as described in the epic Shahnameh, the legendary King Cemusid (Yima) is considered the founder of the festival. He is said to have ascended the throne on this day, bringing peace and prosperity.> It is celebrated worldwide as a festival of renewal and resistance against oppression. Newroz is a shared heritage of the Indo-Iranian cultural sphere.
Hawtemal represents the cosmic origin: it concerns the balance of the universe, while Newroz is the historical derivation for the human struggle for freedom. Cemşid founded Newroz as a festival of glory, and Kawa renewed Newroz as a festival of freedom. | Newroz [Orta.
