A special prayer of the Alevis. To do this, the prayers turn in circles during the Cem ceremony to the sounds of a lute. The word semah means "sky vault". Dedes (the older ones) and the sages (Pir) lead the assembly. During the Semah prayer, participants turn in circles to the sounds of a saz. This is reminiscent of the movements of the planets around the sun, the movement of the earth, the constant change in nature and the cycle in the entire cosmos. As a mystical performance, it is a memory of God brought about by music, song, dance and gestures. The semah is one of the twelve duties in the Cem event, the spiritual assembly of the Alevis. | semah (samah, sama) [din.] [Ar.] |
