That adopted on 21. 06.1934 and came into force on 02.01.1935 Surname Law (Turkey). The surname law specifically forbade certain surnames that contained connotations of foreign cultures, nations, tribes and religions. As a result, many Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Bosniaks, Jews, Arabs, Armenians, Assyrians, Georgians, Serbs, Kurds, DEZDs (Dersimer, Elewites, Zazas, Dimilis) were forced to adopt last names of a more turkish rendition. Unlike the Kurds and DEZD's , other minorities did not have to change their names. But many did so in order not to attract attention as members of an ethnic minority. Kurds and DEZDs, however, had to give up their names in the spirit of assimilation policy. | Qanunê Peyname (21.06.1934) [tar.] |
