The Barons also won their Friday game, edging the Nuremberg Ice Tigers in the Bavarian Derby, 1-0.
German goalie Christian Künast made his fourth consecutive start for the Barons and looked impressive again, posting a .971 save percentage. He turned aside 33 shots as the Moskitos outshot the Barons 34-25.
Essen got off to a good start. After penetrating Munich’s net early on, Marc Savard finally broke the deadlock midway through the first after being set up by Terry Yake on the powerplay.
Munich’s response came quickly, though. Just seconds later, Derek Plante evened the score at one apiece on the powerplay, recording his 16th goal of the season.
New acquisition Manuel Kofler set up Peter Douris for the 2-1 lead two minutes later.
After a scoreless second, it was Douris again who put the game out of reach five minutes into the final period. A pass by 40-year-old defender Eduard Uvira, who was acquired prior to Friday’s game, sent Douris on a breakaway and “Pistol Pete” beat goalie Leo Wild to cap the scoring at 3-1.
