Munich, Germany - He would have missed the DEL’s opening weekend anyway. But with his Munich teammates taking on Cologne on Friday and Schwenningen on Sunday, 19-year-old Barons defender Christoph Schubert was supposed to stay in Canada over the weekend. Drafted 127th overall in the fourth round of this year’s NHL Entry Draft, Schubert had participated in a Senators’ practice camp before a hand injury forced him to return home early.

After successfully participating in a developmental camp earlier this summer, Schubert returned to Ontario last week to compete for a roster spot with the Sens. .

Schubert got hit on the hand during special teams practice. As the injury did not hurt that much initially, Ottawa’s team physician allowed him to continue practicing. Growing pain forced him to eventually quit practice and fly home to Germany.

Further examinations revealed a slight fracture in the hand. Schubert is out indefinitely.
